Pesticide Use Reduction Strategies in Europe: six success stories |

ITALY: Pesticide-free Food In 2001 the Legambiente, Italy’s largest environmental NGO, launched a project aimed at supporting farmers in producing fruit and vegetables free of all pesticide residues. Over 230 farms, including members of Italy’s largest food cooperatives, now participate and are given guidance and support in implementing low pesticide agricultural protocols. Food products grown under the scheme include potatoes, peaches, apricots, onions, kiwi fruits, tomatoes, apples, carrots, lettuce and figs: all of which are certified as being pesticide free and awarded the ‘LAIQ’ logo to denote their superior quality. Central among those strategies employed by producers operating under the scheme are the implementation of Integrated Pest Management, the use of pesticides with a fast metabolism, and the extension of the pre-harvest period. |
